The Black Student Union at Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School closed out Black History Month with its first-ever Showcase.

This “celebration of Black excellence” took place in Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center’s Main Theater, and featured performances, readings, video tributes, and senior recognition.

The Showcase was sponsored by the 65-member Black Student Union, a new organization in its first year at Lincoln Park.

"Here is the thing about Blackness. It’s not one thing. It is not a box you have to fit into. It is not a single way of speaking or dressing or acting," said Demarion Martin, a junior writing & publishing major from New Castle who, along with fellow junior writing & publishing junior Mia Clemons of Farrell, is one of the club’s founders.

“It is vast. And that’s what makes it beautiful.”

Student poets, musicians, and dancers from across LP's seven arts departments performed at the Showcase.

Eleven senior members of the BSU also received special recognition at the conclusion of the event, as well as commemorative BSU pins.

"The truth is, Black people are not one-dimensional. We are artists, scientists, poets, engineers, athletes, politicians, doctors, teachers. We come in different shades, different backgrounds, different experiences, but at the end of the day, we are all connected by something deeper," Martin told the audience. "We are connected by a history of resilience. A history of strength. A history of survival."

Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School is a tuition-free public charter school located in Midland, PA, and open to all Pennsylvania families. Students grades 7-12 are bused from more than 90 different school districts to study the arts concentration of their choice: theatre, writing and publishing, media arts, health science and the arts, music, dance, and pre-law and the arts.
