Lincoln Park students win writing awards

Lincoln Park students win writing awards

 

MIDLAND, Pa. – Brianna Scala of New Castle, Pa., has won the Evie Adams Award, given to an outstanding graduating senior at the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School who plans on pursuing writing in college. The award is named for a local author.

 

Scala was one of 10 students in the school’s creative writing department to receive awards during the recent Synergy Literary and Art Festival at the school, according to Daniel Leroy, Director of Literary Arts. Scala also won first place in the fiction category for her piece “The Refurnishing of the Modern Family.”

 

Margaret Burnside of Mt. Jackson won first place in poetry for “As My Hips Widen.”  Burnside received an honorable mention in fiction for “The Calendar.”

 

Paul Cunningham of Monaca won first place in the stage and screen category for his script entitled “Blue,” a second place in poetry for “ad astra per espera” and an honorable mention in fiction for his story, “The Bill Clinton Hole.” Cunningham also was honored by his fellow senior class members when they elected him to deliver the commencement address at this year’s graduation ceremonies.

 

In other category awards, Alex Palmer of Ambridge received honorable mention in poetry for “I Can’t Hear with All These Clouds in My Ears,” Erin Hall of Economy won second place in fiction for “Accents,” and Chelsey Casey of Pittsburgh received honorable mention in poetry for “She.”

 

The creative writing department selected Courtney Druzak and Taylor Sirko, both of Center, to receive the Commitment to the Craft Award. Logan Thomas of Beaver Falls was chosen for the Outstanding Newcomer Award, and Kyra Kerfoot of Enon Valley received the Community of Writers Award.

 

The Lincoln Park Performing Arts Center is a $28.5 million facility in its second season of offering accessible, affordable entertainment, cultural events and quality arts instruction for the community. It is located 45 minutes northwest of Pittsburgh in Midland, Beaver County. The center hosts the Lincoln Park Performing Arts Charter School, a 400-student Pennsylvania public charter school providing professional training in music, theater, dance, creative writing, vocal performance and media arts, along with a rigorous academic program.
